Villa Vals

Villa Vals is a subterranean alpine retreat carved into the mountainside. Entered through a long tunnel and organized around a light-filled central patio, a sequence of concrete spaces unfolds, softened by wood, stone, and carefully curated interiors. Generous openings frame valley views and bring daylight deep inside, seamlessly connecting architecture, interior, and landscape.

Conceived as an immersive interior landscape, Villa Vals unfolds as a sequence of carefully framed spaces carved directly into the mountainside. Entered through a 22-meter concrete tunnel, the house reveals itself gradually, heightening the transition from the rugged exterior to a calm, light-filled interior. The arrival culminates in a dramatic central opening that brings daylight deep into the subterranean dwelling and establishes a strong visual connection to the alpine valley beyond.

The interior is organized as a series of nested concrete volumes arranged around a central patio. This circular courtyard functions as the spatial and luminous heart of the villa, allowing daylight, views, and fresh air to penetrate all levels. Openings are precisely positioned to reveal the vertical layering of the interior, reinforcing a sense of depth and orientation within the mountain. From within, the slightly inclined viewing angle intensifies the perception of the surrounding peaks, making the landscape an ever-present backdrop to daily life.

Material contrasts define the interior atmosphere. Exposed concrete surfaces provide a robust, sculptural framework, softened by oak paneling, wooden doors, and natural stone steps. These tactile elements anchor the interior to local building traditions while creating a warm and restrained domestic character. The palette is deliberately neutral, allowing light, shadow, and the changing alpine scenery to animate the spaces throughout the day.

The sleeping quarters are compact yet generous in experience. Bedrooms are arranged with bunk beds, raised podiums with king-size beds, and elevated bathrooms, creating layered, efficient spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. Despite the villa’s subterranean nature, all bedrooms receive abundant natural light and uninterrupted views through carefully calibrated openings. On the main living level, the kitchen and living room form an open, communal space, complemented by an additional room that functions as both a guest bedroom and a library.

Interiors were developed in collaboration with Dutch designer Thomas Eyck and feature furniture, textiles, and ceramics by designers such as Hella Jongerius and Studio Job. These curated elements introduce moments of color, craftsmanship, and playfulness.

Together, the interior spaces of Villa Vals offer an elemental yet contemporary living environment—one that embraces the mountain not as a backdrop, but as an integral part of the domestic experience.
