This new vibrant cultural meeting place for the city of Deventer houses 2 larger and 2 smaller cinemas and a polyvalent theatre for up to 180 visitors. It also includes a restaurant, grand café and foyer.
Its special location on the Welle riverside, adjacent to the historical city centre, is an important attribute of which we took advantage in our design. The existing city wall was the impetus in moving the bar to the first floor, allowing for a beautiful view overlooking the IJssel river and the floodplains on the other side.
We designed a very visible and appealing building in the center of the large theatre in order to contain the sound distribution. The cinemas are located on top of the main theatre. The restaurant is situated next to the entrance and the bar on the first floor, which results in a clear positioning of the different functions.
The chosen materials match with the existing adjacent buildings. The brickwork of the facade continues into the interior, and also functions as an acoustic mitigator for the cinemas and theatre. This material also imbues the building with an ‘honest’ image, and is constructed according to the principle that the shell is also the finished work.
